no hot h2o from single handle tub/shower
Author: timmyjimmy5150 (IL)

Hello.
I have a unmarried handle pressure balance tub & shower faucet in my tub/ shower. It has been working fine since new for iii years. Today, I get to have a shower and I accept no hot water. Let me explicate. When I rotate the single handle, the common cold water runs out, but when i continue to rotate the handle to the hot h2o section, the water stops flowing. The sink in the bathroom works fine --- hot and cold water... no trouble.
Any ideas equally to what this trouble may be and how i can fix it?

The pressure balancing spool in the valve is frozen in place finer shutting off the hot water.

What make and model valve do you have? How to prepare it depends on that data. If you don't know, post a flick and we just might...

I know information technology is a Delta... Single handle tub/ shower.... To turn the shower on, there is a "pull-downwardly" handle at the base where the h2o for the tub also flows out....It is nearly 3 or 4 years sometime....

Y'all need a new cartridge because the balancing spool is stuck. You tin can either telephone call Delta and await a week for them to send you one, or buy one at Dwelling Depot. You take to know the model of the faucet either way considering they have different versions.

Aye --- the new cartridge --- that is what my plumber-friend just told me was the problem over the telephone......The balancing spool is stuck and he said I demand a new cartridge --- Is this something I can repair myself? I know very niggling nearly plumbing but I'm kind of handy around the business firm ----

The hard role, equally i of the post-obit question indicates, may be getting the old one out. Once that is washed, it is a simple matter to insert the new i, making sure it is oriented the aforementioned style equally the former one was, and replacing the retainer nut.

Commonly taking the cartridge with yous will be sufficient to get the new one.

Or, See if you tin find your valve hither to get a parts breakdown.

Exist carefull taking the bonnet nut off.
Many Delta Valves have a weakness where the two halves of the valve are connected by iii small tubes.
If you lot take hold of the bonnet nut with a pair of channel locks, then crush information technology into an oval shape, then try to turn it you lot will rip the forepart i/2 of the valve of and plow a small-scale task into a big ane.
By and large by hand or very carefully is the mode to get!

If yous are not comfortable with this I would suggest a plumber.
This is what the valve with the three tubes looks like. It is hidden nether a chrome tube then you don't know its there, or, what is happening until it is too late.

Once I get the new cartridge..... I unscrew the bonnet cover and remove the quondam cartridge, correct? Do I demand to turn the water off to do this? the main water supply that is.....

Yes, before the bonnet nut is attempted the whole house must be shut off in about cases. Unless there are valves which isolate only the tub/shower.

Unless y'all have a positive ID on the cartridge from the web link I provided above I would take out the cartridge and bring it with you for matching purposes.

There are a few models where the valve is split in the valve body and not in the cartridge also.
ID is important.

If you lot do not plough off the water, do not try the repair at 3:00 a.m., like one of my customers did, because things will get extremely wet very quickly.

Okay.. So tell me if this sounds right...
I need to shut off the main house water supply offset (no close-off valves merely for tub).
Next, remove the handle and cover plate.
Then, pull off the chrome tube cover.
Remove the faucet shaft stops and then the brass collar (bonnet).
Once the retaing collar (bonnet) is removed, I can pry the plastic cartridge away from the brass housing and insert the new cartridge....
Correct?
1 other thing --- Can't I but supervene upon the spring loaded seals in the cartridge instead of the entire cartridge itself?
Wouldn't that be cheaper?

No need to remove the cover plate. The retaining nut is exterior the wall once you slide the comprehend tube off.

What about my proposition of but replacing the leap-loaded seals instead of the entire cartridge itself.....

That is not where the problem is. And some versions accept them internally where you lot should non go to them.

Howdy all. I may have the exact same problem, but I was wondering if anyone would care to speculate otherwise. I'g buying a 3 yr old home, and upon domicile inspection, the unmarried-handle type valve (in the shower) emits h2o on one side (either hot or cold; I didn't examine it myself) but not the other; all other faucets work fine. It is a foreclosure, and so the firm may take been sitting for some time, which might be key because of corrosion build upward over time. I'm but wondering if it might exist really likely that the whole entire pipe for 1 side might be entirely backed up and needs to be entirely ripped out rather than but being the valve. Nosotros are in winter, but pipes would never freeze where I live (in the desert in Las Vegas). Has anyone ever had an incidence where water wouldn't come out, and it turned out that the unabridged piping had to exist ripped out?

I'chiliad having the same exact problem, I'm glad to know I'm non all alone.
So my question:Can I merely just a new handle arrangement ? For me this would be easier than trying to replace just the pressure balancing spool. Would that work ? I'chiliad guessing if I bought a new shower handle it would come with a new pressure balancing spool?
Thank You
ShirtGuy
